Case study 2 negotiation - Essay Example In this case, the supervisor is fast to dismiss Danya’s application. According to Dwyer (2011), â€Å"Power is a useful tool in the negotiation process; however, if you misuse it or refuse to use it appropriately, the likely result is tension and conflict† (p. 154). The tension between the supervisor and Tanya came about as the supervisor used the power that he had over her to dismiss her application, and made comments that were not pleasing at all. If the supervisor had listened to Danya’s positions and interests, he would have approached her in a calm manner that would not have threatened the relationship between them. This case study looks into the cause of the problem and how it impacted on the main participants. It also suggests and evaluates some solutions, recommends the best solution and explains how to implement it by using the â€Å"negotiation theory ". Analysis of the problem The problem can be analyzed by examining the negotiation approaches of Dany a and her supervisor. The problem occurs because both parties have interests to meet and the two are not keen to consider the other party’s point view. Danya’s interest are visiting her grandchild and wants to do so by taking advantage of the flight promotion so as to pay less for the flight. Danya’s optimism of getting the leave and an addition of two weeks leave get thwarted and she gets devastated because of the rejection. The supervisor on the other hand has a contract that has a limited deadline and needs Danya’s support because she happens to be one of the best worker. The problem ensued as the two parties could not agree on what should happen. The supervisor is stern on his decision and rejects her application without giving Danya a chance of explaining herself as to why she needed to have her break at that time. Furthermore, he acts out of the stress of the contract and allows the stress to overcome his thoughts and emotions and is quick to make n egative comments about Danya. According to Leimbach (2011), â€Å"Paying attention to interests helps uncover the "why" behind a position.† (p. 36). If Danya had listened to why the supervisor was not willing to grant her the leave, she would have understood him and there would not have been any problem. Danya also assumes that her being the best of the employees would definitely make the supervisor grant her, her wants. She was not ready for any outcome and was not flexible to allow herself take in any outcome of the application. She is quick to judge the supervisor’s actions and believes the company does not recognize her excellent performance, which makes her to burst out. She is also frustrated that she will lose the money of the ticket she’d already paid for. She feels disappointed when her request is turned down by the supervisor who tells her that she is not showing any commitment to the company. According to Jenkins (1997), â€Å"with a principled negot iation approach, the salesperson focuses on the problem and how to solve it† (p. 30). In this case, instead of getting frustrated by the way the supervisor acted, she ought to have thought of how the misunderstanding of the supervisor thinking she has no commitment to the company would get settled. Good V. Evil Essay The Strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde represents a conflict between good and evil. One character (Jekyll) is determined to keep his impulses in check and ignore temptations, while the other character, Mr. Hyde, is brazen and submits to any temptation or impulse. The four main characters in the story are all men of similar social class who are capable of keeping their impulses in check and denying the temptations of evil. In the case of Dr. Jekyll however, Dr. Jekyll is not able to say no to the evils and uses an alternate identity to unleash the monster from within. The story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde can be easily related to the reader, as everybody knows the temptations of evil and the pleasures that both good and evil can bring somebody. Dr. Jekyll experiences strong tendencies of both good and bad. Unlike most men of Dr. Jekylls age and geography, Jekyll cannot keep himself from indulging in the pleasures that the evil side can provide. Jekylls trip into extreme evil (Mr. Hyde) is partially due to the fact that he has lived such an acceptable and exemplinary life in the past and he holds himself to a higher standard than some of his collegues. Robert Louise Stevenson describes Dr, Jekyll as a man who his friends were those of his own blood or those whom he had known the longest. (Ch1. P2) Dr. Jekyll seems to only trust those whom he was most comfortable with and does not let people that he barely knows too close into his life. It is possible that Dr. Jekyll did not reach out and become friends with too many people because he was aware of the evilness that was lurking inside of him. The attitude of Dr. Jekyll is described in the opening paragraph as at friendly meetings and when the wine was to his taste, something eminently human beaconed from his eyeStevenson. Could it be possible that Dr. Jekyll was aware of the evil secret life that he hides from the real world? It appears that there was something a little strange about Dr. Jeykll that others couldnt exactly figure out yet. Mr. Enfield is asked by Mr. Utterson to describe Dr. Jekyll so Enfield describes Jekyll as somebody who I never saw a man I so disliked. he gives a strong feeling of deformity, although I couldnt specify the pointStevenson,pg. 1680. The bad side of Dr. Jekyll is evident just by his demeanor although it is nothing compared to the evilness of Mr. Hyde. Mr. Hyde represents the dark side of Dr, Jekyll. Hyde only comes to life when Jekyll takes the drug that brings him out. The drug that unleashes Hyde at first makes Jekyll feel terribly sick but shortly after, Jekyll feels incredible and almost as though he is not human. Jekylls evil fantasies and impulses become a reality after he takes the drug. The drug makes Jekyll feel like he is a whole different person and that allows him to do whatever evil things he wants to do. The good in Jekyll is only returned if he takes an antidote. Just like many other people there is a constant struggle between good and evil of our everyday lives. People who struggle with drugs or alcohol or any other worldly temptations live a similar life to the one that Dr. Jekyll lives. Life is not easy for anybody and sometimes people need to escape their reality for a little while by taking a drug just like Jekyll does. Stevenson does well in creating a parallel between good and evil that people can relate to in their everyday lives. Stevensons story is very similar to a modern film called Limitless staring Bradley Cooper. In Limitless, Cooper, a young man struggling to pay his bills, tries a new drug that gives him extreme brain power which he uses to achieve great wealth and success. The success is only attainable with the use of the drug and without the drug, Cooper becomes sick and very weak, similar to what happens with Dr. Jekyll when he is without the drug. Just like Jekyll, Coopers health starts to dwindle as the supply of drugs becomes smaller and smaller. Stevenson is perhaps trying to teach the reader a valuable lesson in saying no to the temptations of evil. These temptations can often be difficult to ignore. Stevnson seems to suggest the Dr. Jekyll is the victim of a split personality disorder which was a new concept during the Victorian age. The only difference between Dr. Jekylls condition and a split personality disorder is that in the case of somebody suffering from split personalities, the person is aware of the other personality and can bring this person out willfully. Mr. Hyde however, cannot control Jekylls personalty and is not even aware of him. Dr. Jekyll is aware of Mr, Hyde though and understands the evilness that Mr. Hyde causes when Jekyll loses control and takes the drug too much. Mr. Hyde begins to take complete control Stvenson might be suggesting that even if a person is good, once they give into their evil tendencies there is no trunigng back. When Dr. Jekyll starts to flirt with hs bad sidem he begins to lose control of his personality and he eventually loses his friends and good nature. Stevnson displays the power of good will and the consewuences of even the first approach at evil. Once somebody is indulged into a bad habit, they can let their abad habit take control of their lives and it becomes extremely difficult to come back from the evilness once it has become a major part of your life. Dr. Jekyll says, with every day and from both sides of my intelligence, the moral and intellectual, I thus drew steadily nearer to the truthby whose partial discovery I have been doomed to such a dreadful shipwreck: that man is not truly one, but truly two Stevenson. Jekyll is describing the affects of his choices and how he is now truning into his bad side for good because that is the person that he has become. Stevensons main goal in writing this story is to create horror and excitement for the reader. He leaves the reader to draw their own conclusions about the message in the story but it is clear to me that this story is about human nature and the batte of good vs. evil. Once a human gives into their temtations they are more likely to indulge in these evil deeds again and again. Dr. Jekyll tried a drug that made him into a different person and he enjoye giving into his evil tendencies. Eventually these evil tendencies took control over Jekyll and he became too evil to return to the good natured Dr. the his colleagues knew.

The practice of using animals for testing has been a controversial issue over the past thirty years. Animal testing is a morally debated practice. The question is whether animal testing is morally right or wrong. This paper will present both sides of this issue as well as my own opinion.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Approximately two to four million animals have been used in safety tests. Safety tests are conducted with a wide range of chemicals and products, including drugs, vaccines, cosmetics, household cleaners, and packing materials. This raises issues such as the ethics and humaneness of deliberately poisoning animals, thus harming them, for the sake of marketing a new cosmetic or household product.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Humane Society of the United States promotes research methods that can potentially replace, reduce, or refine animal use so that animals experience less suffering. An opinion poll was taken by the HSUS on September 23, 2001 on pain and distress in research. The findings were that 62% of people would approve of testing if little or no pain was experienced by the animals, while 75% disapprove when severe pain is experienced.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  There is a moral blind spot in the treatment of animals that enable us to justify the cruelties for the perceived benefits of humans. Animals are living things. They have lungs which breathe, hearts which beat, and blood that flows. In fact, animals sense of smell, sight, and sound is much more acute than our own. Therefore, we can assume that their sensitivity to pain is at least equal to ours. According to Hippocrates, â€Å"The soul is the same in all living creatures, although the body of each is different.† This can go with the Duty Theory that states that every individual gets treated the same. The intentions of animal testing is not to harm the animals, but that is exactly what it does. In opposition of Hippocrates, others believe animals cannot be entitled to rights because they have no understanding and that testing on them is a necessity. A treatment to prevent scarring and loss of vision after glaucoma surgery will soon be tried on patients. This was made possible using rabbits. Following successful studies on mice and rats, a vaccine for malaria is now being tested on people. There is a wealth of evidence showing that animal â€Å"models† are not accurate and cannot be relied upon for safety testing and disease research. Scientists and doctors recognize that while animals are biologically very similar to human beings, they are not identical.

Jealousy Snow White

Jealousy in Snow-White Few people can grow up within today's society without knowing the tale of Snow White. From the Grimm Brothers to Disney, it has been told and retold to children throughout the ages. However, what is often overlooked are the true meanings within the story. Fairytales typically have underlying messages that can be found between the lines, generally in terms of the key themes. Snow-White discusses the theme of jealousy, and shows how humans' obsessions of material can lead to their own downfall as well as the harm of others. When focusing on the relationship between Snow-White and her stepmother the Queen, it is evident that the jealousy inside the story results in a power struggle in which beauty and pride are seen as the basis for the stepmother’s envy towards Snow-White. â€Å"This gave the queen a great shock, and she became yellow and green with envy, from that hour her heart turned against Snow-White, and she hated her. † Throughout the story of Snow-White jealousy is omnipresent. The major evidence of jealousy is the daily ritual of the queen in which she consults her magic mirror on who is the most beautiful person in the kingdom. As she says, â€Å"Looking-glass upon the wall, who is the fairest of us all? † she repeatedly expects to be in her favor. One day she is outraged when it appeared that Snow-White surpassed her. This information drove the queen to hate Snow-White and generates jealousy and soon she ordered her death. By looking at beauty as commodity through which power can be gained, this action can be interpreted as a mean for the queen to preserved her power through beauty. The stepmother is very narcissistic and obsessed with power, she constantly wants to be the center of all the attention. She is afraid that snow white will gradually take her place as the most beautiful woman in the kingdom. As a result, she fears that Snow-White could use her beauty in order to usurp power from the queen and surpasses her. After all, snow white was young and beautiful, and the queen would only deteriorate with time. In the story, the pride of the queen was to be the most beautiful of the kingdom. Indeed, â€Å"Pride pumped in her like a poison. † Until one day, the mirror replied â€Å"queen you are full fair, its true but snow white is fairer han you. † This statement is a turning point among the story. She becomes green with envy and obsessed by the desire of killing Snow-White. Jealousy seized the queen one more time as she could not stand not to be the best. This time, more than her rank and the fear to loose her power, she is loosing her own pride and is jealous about the fact that she is not THE most beautiful woman. She was very obsessed to be the fairest, she bel ieved in her mirror and was enraged that, â€Å"snow-white was a thousand time fairer than the queen would never be. Her extreme jealousy towards snow-white pushed her to madness, and non-human behaviors. She eats the heart and liver of a beast believing that they are snow-white’s organs. Another interpretation we can give to the story could be what Snow-White represents to the King’s eyes. Snow-white is the daughter of the King and the former queen. This is making the queen particularly jealous in two ways. First, she is probably annoyed that she is the daughter of another queen and that herself doesn’t have any child. It is an opposition of blood between stepmother and stepdaughter. In the other hand, the jealousy comes from that snow white will naturally generates interest to the king as she is his daughter. The queen would not want to share her husband with her stepdaughter. To sum up, jealousy of the queen in the story of snow white is absolutely outrageous. The obsession of the queen and her extreme jealousy leads her to madness and crime. She commits act of cannibalism and repeatedly attempt to kill Snow-White. Her sins took her to her own downfall as she is the one that finally dies in the story. The story teaches us a lesson, not to be vain, and be blessed with what you have instead.

“First Party at Ken Keseys with Hells Angels” and ”The Great Gatsby” Essay

In both Allen Ginsberg’s poem â€Å"First Party at Ken Keseys with Hells Angels† and Chapter 3 of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby, there are scenes of an exclusive, extravagant, fun party. Both writers employ a series of literary techniques in order to help convey their theme. The use of characterization and establishment of the setting of their parties in both works help depict a common theme that everything is not as it seems. This is shown in Kesey’s poem through his imagery when establishing the setting and his characterization of the partygoers. In The Great Gatsby, the setting shows a lot of the partygoers, but the way the author characterizes Jay Gatsby, the host, strongly reinforces the theme. Upon reading the poem and the chapter there are many parallels between the two when the way the author establishes the setting is analyzed. For one, they both have guests entertain by a prime party location better seen as â€Å"the huge wooden h ouse† or â€Å"Gatsby’s mansion†. Having a large venue allows there to be lots of guests which is another attribute to these parties. When it becomes evident in the poem that some of the partygoer’s don’t belong, the theme is strongly reinforced. It states that â€Å"children sleeping softly in their bedroom bunks.† From the description of the party, with all its drugs and alcohol and loud music, this is not a space for children. This could be an explanation for the presence of â€Å"4 police cars parked outside the painted gate.† This contributes to the whole idea that things have gone awry, and that the police had to come in to deal with it. This fact reveals a dark side to scenario created in the poem, and shows that everything is not as it seems. In The Great Gatsby, as Nick watches Gatsby’s parties closer, he realizes that â€Å"people were not invited—they went there†, revealing a different side to this scenario. The fact that people just show up willingly to his parties means that there is an alternate motive involved in this hospitality to complete strangers. It implies that the random people will not be turned away, creating a meeting ground for many, many different kinds of people, each here for a different purpose. Upon analyzing the setting and mechanics of each party, though they differ in the types of attendees, they show that there is a lot going on behind the scenes and thus everything isn’t as it seems. The types of attendees play a huge role in the development of the theme in each work. In Ginsberg’s poem it can be inferred that it is an after party for the band Hells Angels. These performers are seen as â€Å"tired souls hunched over in black leather jackets,† implying they are weary and either asleep or almost there. This stays consistent as it continues to talk about a tired, â€Å"skinned man sweating, dancing for hours† meaning that all the partygo ers are exhausted and the effect of the party is strongly shown. Another take on this is that something seriously wrong had happened and the tired men and women, lying there sleeping are the cause of something sinister. This explains the fact that the police are present and that at this supposedly â€Å"normal† party things aren’t so easily decrypted. In Fitzgerald’s novel the character who most strongly supports the theme is the host of the party himself. While Nick and Jordan Baker are roaming the party, they pick up many stray rumors about Jay Gatsby, hearing that â€Å"he killed a man once† or that he â€Å"was a German spy during the war†. All of these negative denotations to Gatsby’s image lead one to believe that he is in fact a bad person, and there must be something in it for him to throw these ridiculous parties. Upon meeting the fellow, Nick sees him as just the opposite of that making note of his incredulous smile. Nick becomes entranced in wanting to know more about Gatsby, but he still does not believe anything that he is being told. This still leaves Gatsby as the mystery man, and can be used as an example to show that at this party, even the host may not be who he seems to be. In conclusion, through their use of diction to develop the setting and the way characters are described, Allen Ginsberg and F. Scott Fitzgerald effectively convey this theme in both of their works. Ginsberg focuses more upon the way that the scene is set up and the actions of the characters as a whole. In contrast, Fitzgerald focuses on the development of a single character, the scene revolves around him and the way that the reader infers he is using the party. In different ways both works clearly exemplify a common theme that everything is not as it seems.

Those that lived in a Great House usually didnt marry because there were many slaves in the House that were used to serve the lords. Once the wife was chose the father must go to the keeper of the woman, whether it is her father or owner, and ask for permission. If given permission the father and son must prepare a dowry for the future wife (9). After receiving the dowry the two will be wed when both guardians feel they are of the right age. When the day of the wedding comes the man will prepare himself for his wife (5). He will clean himself up and then if he has not already done so he will go buy food for a feast (11) that is hosted by the groom for his relatives and neighbors. The groom will then travel to his wifes parents or guardians house to take her back to his own house (13). After the wedding is over the goal in the marriage is merely to have children. Most of the time the two that are wed do not love each other, instead they have a common respect for one another to have children. He then created the corporate group, Inedited. Inedited had become one of the worlds largest specialty retailers; it had six different chains, through which Inedited designed, manufactured, and sold apparel, footwear, and accessories for women, men, and kids around the world. Stability distinguished Inedited from other apparel retails. Although Inedited had become a public company with increasing stock price and high margins, Inedited always aimed to become a very sustainable company rather than cost profitable one in the world. Ezra was the largest and most internationalization chain for Inedited. Its headquarter was located in Artesia, Spain. Ezra was well known for its success in creating fast-fashion by selling fashion items at affordable prices and responding the market trend very quickly. Its business system and international expansion had become Indiess proudest decision. Inedited became increasingly international after 2001. It announced that Saras strategy in international expansion was the main reason for the groups sales growing globally. Ezra was no doubt the ash cow and key business for Inedited. However, Ezra itself faced some difficulties when expanding internationally. The differences in cultures and regulations made the expansion much riskier. After its failure in Italy in 1998, and competitors failures in U. S. Market, Ezra and Inedited had to be more concerned and careful about entering into a foreign new market. Moreover, top management in Inedited started to think about further plans for the group. Managing six different chains, they planned to develop other chains (or new chains) into a star business as successful as Ezra. This report will focus on loving Saras international expansion issue, as Ezra was so far the largest business for Inedited, and its issue was relatively urgent. After Ezra establishing a sustainable and more successful long-term international business, Indiess other chains could learn from its experiences. Inedited would be more capable and confident in managing and developing other chains into another large and international model like Ezra. ISSUE STATEMENT Inedited had to allow Ezra to expand and develop primarily, in order to grow into a stable and large organization rather than only focusing on home business (focusing in Spain). But International expansion was very expensive, and not that easy as different countries had different regulations, cultures, market demand and preferences. Large apparel firms like Ezra, H and Benton had met difficulties attempting to enter foreign markets. Meanwhile, Ezra had almost covered the whole market in Spain; in order to grow, it demanded larger market outside the home country. Thus, the issue statement discussed in this report is the future geographic focus for Ezra: Which foreign market should Ezra focus in its international expansion, and what are the strategies to enter the market? SITUATION ANALYSIS Saras Business System Ezra was the largest and most internationalization of Indiess chains, which are six independently operated chains and was responsible for their own strategy (Ezra, 8). In 2001, Ezra generated 85% of Indiess earnings and 76% of total sales. It generally targeted medium and high-income level and fashion sensitive consumers; while the income level of target market may be different in different countries. It was the leader in the fast fashion industry. The business system distinguished Ezra from other retailers, and enabled it to have a quick response to the market and fashion trend. Saras success came room its highly vertical integration strategy. It owned different levels of supply chain, from design, sourcing and manufacturing distribution and retail. This strategy allowed Ezra to better control the performance and quality of product, be highly efficient in delivering consumers preferred product to the market. Saras goal was to create a sense of scarcity, and to offer consumers fashionable product with reasonable quality and affordable price. The vertical integration strategy contributed to this goal by shortening the cycle time from design to retail to four weeks (over 6 months for the traditional industry), educing the working capital intensity, and reducing the inventory pressure. Design Ezra had three product lines: women, men and children. All of them had their own creative designers, sourcing and product development specialists. Several dozens items were designed each day, but only 1 13 of them would actually go into production (Ezra, 10). Ezra designed almost all products in-house. The designers cooperated well with store managers, and used an advanced technology system to track the data to analyze the market trend. Sourcing Manufacturing Ezra had purchasing offices in Barcelona and Hong Kong to help it source fabric, other inputs, and finished products from external suppliers. It bought endued fabric in order to adjust with the most recent updating in fashion trend. Ezra outsourced the production of basic item (price sensitive but time insensitive), and produced the fashionable item (40% of products) in-house for better control and quality. Large amount of outsourced goods were from Europe, so that Ezra saved time in transportation process. Only 20% of finished garments were manufactured in Asia, while H outsourced nearly all of the products to Asia. Distribution Majority of Saras sewn garments were produced in small workshops and sent to Saras centralized distribution. It was located in Artesia. Ezra only allowed most Of the products to Stay there for a few hours. Third-party delivery services shipped the items twice a week to stores over the world, mostly by truck. Only 25% was shipped by air because it was expensive. Retailing The price of Saras products was relatively low, and Ezra located its stores in prime areas of different cities. Ezra saved costs by investing little money in advertising and by efficient, vertically integrated supply chain. Ezra maintained a competitive price in every market. Although prices in different countries varied due to transportation cost, tax and exchange rate, the advertisement promotion strategy was generally maintained in every country. Store managers played a significant role. Ezra offered them large power to manage the store like their own business, and also offered high compensation and bonus as incentives. They provided critical data and feedback to designers and contributed to the design process; they were responsible for the selecting and training in-store personnel; they also made decisions on ordering and store operations. International Expansion After 2001, Ezra had 282 stores in 32 foreign countries, it had most foreign stores in Europe and only 5 in Asia (Japan). Ezra owned the stores in less risky and large market, but the costs would be higher. Ezra used franchising to enter small, risky markets with cultural differences and regulation barriers. Ezra used joint venture when the market was large and important but with barriers. STOW Analysis of Saras Business Strength The fast fashion concept, quick response and sense of scarcity were attractive to the consumers. The price was relatively low and competitive. The business cycle time was short from design to retail. Inventory was controlled low. The designers were creative. The strong centralized distribution system and vertical integration were distinctive feature of Saras business and made it hard for other brands to copy. Weakness Promotion was weak compared to HM, due to little advertising investment. Production or outsourced costs were relatively high, as HM outsourced mostly to Asia while Ezra focus more on Europe manufactures with higher costs. Since there was only one distribution center, there might be discomposes of scale if Ezra developed more stores. The only distribution center may not have enough capacity to handle too much stores around the world. It would also be risky to handle all items in one center. The goal of low inventory sometimes could not satisfy the demand. The joint venture agreement with foreign partners was sometimes complex in responsibilities, and there were risks that Ezra had to buy out the partners interest. Also, under international expansion, store managers would be hired from different countries and may not understand Saras concept well. Thus they may not operate Saras business in an efficient and standardized way. Purport unity The potential market was very large because apparel industry was needed in every country. There would be social, cultural, political, economic and regulation differences if entering into foreign new market. ALTERNATIVES ANALYSIS 1. Fully focus on European market 2. Expand aggressively into North American and Asian market 3. Expand globally, specifically, cover European market in a more aggressive way than other places in short run, then in long term open more stores in North America and Asia. Alternative 1: Fully Focus On European Market Pros The European market was lucrative. Ezra had most of its foreign stores in Europe so far, thus it would had more experiences. The home country and distribution center were both in Europe, which would save more time and made the business easier to control. There would be less cultural differences. The consumers preference into fashion was more similar within Europe than other countries oversea. The major potential market could be Greece, Sweden and Italy. Italy was the largest single apparel market in Europe, its consumers visited apparel stores more frequently and they Were more fashion conscious (Ezra, 19). According to the analysis above, alternative 3 would collect sales both from all three large markets, and thus should have more market share. It would be more sustainable due to the short term and long term focus. By successfully growing into a stable, large, profitable and global organization, Ezra would have awareness and thus better brand image and consumer loyalty. Recommendation Based on the analysis, the report recommends alternative 3. It would maximize the profit by reaching all the potential markets in the world in long term. Since there were risks and concerns for each market, the best way for Ezra to grow would be expanding its market by following a short-term and long-term strategy. However, because of the limitation of each market, Ezra till have to adjust its current business system when adopting alternative 3. Action plan Short Run Although expanding the business globally required Ezra to enter all three large markets (Europe, Asia and North America), in the short run, Ezra should focus more on European market. In 2002 Ezra planned to open 55-65 new stores. It is recommended to open 90 stores in the next year with around 75% in Europe. France, Germany, the ILK, Italy, Portugal, Greece should be major European markets outside Spain, since they are larger, less risky, relatively stable and advanced. Sports is a big part of life for my family, and every one of my siblings, including me, started playing sports when we were kids. I played multiple sports while growing up. I played football, baseball, soccer, track and basketball, so I was always going to practice or playing in a game. The sport I loved the most is football. I started playing football when I was seven. At that age I was able to wear full pads and tackle because that was the starting age for full contact football. I had a lot of special moments in football, such as, catching my first interception, and scoring my first touchdown. One special moment changed how I played football, which happened my 8th grade year. Each year I periodically got better and better. My 8th grade year was one of my toughest years of playing football. I didn’t really get to start that much during the season. By mid-season I broke my wrist. During a play I was pushed in the back, and I stuck my hand out to help myself stay up, and my wrist snapped in two places. At first I didn’t feel it, and I thought it was just swollen. I believed I could just shake it off till I went to the sideline to have the coach check it out. He told me that it was broken, and that was when all the pain started. But through it all I managed to stay calm and keep a straight face. That ended my 8th grade year, which was terrible. After recovering I was scared to actually hit someone, so my first two years of high school I didn’t play the way I used to play. My junior and senior year were the best I have played football. Those were the years I started hitting the weights hard, thanks to my dad. My dad was my inspiration for playing football. He also helped me through my recovery. He was the one who got me into playing football and playing to my best ability. He would always lecture me after either a good game or a bad game. He went to every single one of my games and watched me play very closely. After each game he always had something to complain about what I did wrong. It would get annoying, but I understood and tried my hardest to fix the problem. Even if I did well in a game, he would still have something to say. He made me into the player I am today. For half my life I played the sport I loved the most, football. I was disappointed that it had to end my senior year. Football made me into the person I am today, and I am thankful for that. I am also thankful for my dad, who would never give up on me. Even though he was always pointing out the negative things, his advice helped me become better.

Thus, objectives of this current study links between EI and performance at work field. General mood is related to adapt to changes and to elucidate problems of personal or social nature. Incomplete questionnaires will be rejected as there due to lack of informations. In this study, job performance is dependent variable and EI is independent variable. In order to appraise the EI of the sample, Emotional Intelligence scale constructed by (Schutte et al., 1998) is used. The apparatus holds 33 items using a 5-point Likert scale, in which 1 represents ‘strongly disagree’ and 5 ‘strongly agree’. Kenneth does a good job showing the problems he had growing up and the way his family got in the way of his experiments. From the film, one can see the affection towards his family and his love for experimenting with dead people. Although video games can increase aggressive behavior, they can improve memory and logistical thinking, as well as teach perseverance. Over the course of the last few decades video games have been integrated into the lives of our children. Video games are very appealing to children of all ages, and even to some adults. There is a variety of video games out there, and they range from educational to very violent. Because of this diverse selection of video games, there is a wide range of positive and negative side effects that these games can have on children. Because a large percentage of our children’s time is spent playing video games, there has been a lot of research in recent years on the positive and negative effects these games have on them. â€Å"Among elementary and middle-school populations, girls play for an average of about 5. 5 hours/week and boys average 13 hours/week,† (Gentile, D. A. 2004). Teenagers also spend a time playing video games. According to Media Analysis Laboratory (1998),†Eighty percent of teens said they played at least occasionally and the average amount of time spent gaming for the sample was 5 hours per week† (para. 19). Video game play has become not only a leisurely pastime for children, but for families also. When parents are not involved in some of their game play the outcome can become a little scary. Children who play video games with their families have a more pro-social attitude compared to their counterparts who play alone. Children who are less social or somewhat anti-social tend to develop aggressive tendancies when spending long hours gaming alone especially when violent video games are involved. Cresia Reese English 1020 Prof Sparks Traditions of scapegoating found in â€Å"The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas† and â€Å"The Lottery† The various cultures that exist in the United States all have different ways to scapegoat a variety of people and cultures in society today; as depeicted in the fiction stories â€Å"The Lottery† by Shirley Jackson and â€Å"The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas† by Ursula K. Le Guin.In â€Å"The Lottery,† is a story about a community that has passed down a tradition of death by stoning for many years, this person would become the scapegoat of the community. In the story â€Å"The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas†a community has a hidden secret which involves the captivity of one person who has to live a life of despair in order for a community to thrive. In comparing both stories to life as we know it today, we have found that there are traditions which have been passed down in our communities and eventually l ead to a person to become the scapegoat of the community.How do our various cultures today allow passed traditions to use individuals as scapegoats just like we find in our fictions stories? The word scapegoat means, a person or group made to bear the blame for others or to suffer in their place. The idea of a scapegoat applies to both stories in the same manner, a person is used as a scapegoat to uphold there communities. Both stories use traditions of there past ancestral history to use a person as a scapegoat to carry on the behaviors that were passed down to them via traditions.Shirley Jackson was an author who used a perfect example of scapegoat in her stories. â€Å"The Lottery† brings us to the scapegoat aspect of this story you see that the traditions in the community allows for another scapegoat victim every year, they are stoned to death in a symbolic process. Ursula K. Le Guin also used a scapegoat the hidden person to hold up a community and keep it from the dange rs of the outside world. These traditions were passed down by the ancestors of the people who currently live in this place. Also in â€Å"The Ones Who Walk Away rom Omelas† there are several people who have chosen to walk away from the hidden secret that was revealed to them and they did not wish to remain in that community any more. The hidden secret was symbolic as a scapegoat because without this person this community would have failed based on passed traditions. To compare the traditions of stoning a person to death and hiding a person to up hold a community are both forms of scapegoat. The scapegoat matters in both the stories and show that as human beings that we believe in history and certain traditions in our communities.Also people and things are used as scapegoats as passed down by traditions and as a symbolic way to forge ahead in life, so they do not hinder there communities. Why should the people in our communities not follow along with the traditions of the past ? Because we feel that these traditions followed by our ancestors did not prove to be right and they should not be followed in the current times. When you think about the story â€Å"The Lottery† you have been thrown a curve ball, most people think about a lottery used in our current day and age where you have a slim chance of winning something good like prizes or money.We soon come to find out that a lottery in this story is all a sham; â€Å"At mid morning on a late June day a peaceful village crowd gathers on the square for the annual lottery. The procedures have been handed down over generations with little change. While in the harmless process of drawing lots the villagers reveal their excitement. Suddenly, when the winner is selected, the innocent game turns out to be a horrifying sacrifice: the winner is stoned to death for the welfare of the community. Such is the limited picture that could be given of Shirley Jackson’s ‘The Lottery’. (Schaub 1) A s we find out in this story there is another thing that also stands out in this story and that would be the black box in this story. In the story the black box is used as a way to single out one person to be the winner of the said lottery. The black box is a symbol in the story of the way to reduce the size of a community. This is why they held the lottery each year they would bring all the families together in the square and have them to pull a slip of paper from the box and eventually at the end of the gathering one of the residence in this community would lose there life.We can see that scapegoats are recognized in both objects and actions as we find in both stories â€Å"The Lottery† and â€Å"The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas†. In â€Å"The Lottery† the pulling of a name from a black a black wooden box and then there was the death of one person at the end by being hit with stones. The character (Tessie Hutchinson) was one who was always ready to be the one to throw the stones, but when it came time for her to be the on being hit by the stones she felt that it was not fair and or right. â€Å"It isn’t fair’ she said. A stone hit her on the side of the head† (Jackson 218).You have (Tessie Hutchinson) who was very excited every year to be a part of the traditional lottery process and when it came time for her to be stoned she was the scapegoat in the traditional process. Then we move on to â€Å"The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas† where there are several characters: one (the child) who was forced to be the scapegoat, and al the ones who walked away from the community (many people). They all chose to be free from the scapegoat act of holding this child to support the community which was free of all major problems that many communities face today.The issues today in different cultures, religions, and stories using people and things as scapegoats to uphold current and traditional believes. Moving forward to comp are the scapegoats used in both stories to show how our traditions, which are passed down still eventually lead to people to being used as scapegoats in our communities today. â€Å"So that the lottery is to be understood as a modern representation of the primitive annual scapegoat rite† (Schaub 1). This information hits the nail on the head as the lottery process is a primitive act that we are not sure why this was even being done and it was never explained.In today’s society there are still several groups (cults, religious groups, & clubs/organizations) that are secluded from most communities and societies today. We know some of these groups have different rituals and rules as to who and how you are allowed to become involved. These rituals most times come from traditions which were taught by the ancestors of the leaders or promoters of said cults and groups.
