Food additives have been around for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years. They have been used for a wide variety of purposes: to preserve food to keep it from spoiling, to enhance flavor, or the simple purpose of making food look more presentable to whoever is going to consume it. But the most prominent food additive is what is called M.S.G. This food additive, whose name is short for Monosodium Glutamate, has been in the U.S. for over 60 years. This is a food additive that has been known to kill, which is why it should be removed from the market in the first place, or at least be heavily regulated by the FDA. The play goes straight in with a sense of violence, as in Act 1 Scene 1 where a fight fuelled by the hatred of the opposite family, and the hatred of peace, and talk of peace? I hate the word, such as Tybalt says in the heart of the battle. This reveals the loathing that is upheld against each family by the other. Both Lords of the Families try to join in, as they feel the fight is not complete without their appearance. However they are restrained by their wives. All of this is also invigorated by anger also, as the ancient grudge break to new mutiny. This means that there has been a long running feud between the two families, and this current clash counts for nothing compared to the years of fighting that have already taken place. The Prince of Verona broke up this fight, but they all know that the dragon which is the burden of hatred over the city may rear its ugly head when unwanted at any time, and it will most likely be when they least expect it. Later on in this scene, Romeo shows the first signs of his unpleasant mood that continues throughout most of the play. The self-confidence and dignity has an effect on the reader, so that he seems to be a desirable person to marry and be associated with. We learn that there is to be a masquerade feast occurring at the house of Lord Capulet, which is traditional and happens annually. Capulet invites Paris, who has persuaded the Lord to let him woo Juliet in the hope that she will marry him. At this stage, Lord Capulet makes a mistake in sending Peter, a servant that cannot read, to take a list of names and visit the invited and tell them about the party. Romeo and Benvolio happen to be passing by at the time when Peter is struggling to read one of the names, and asks them to read out the names. He proceeds to launch into random and meaningless dialogues, trying to lift Romeos gloomy mood. Queen Mab is the queen of the fairies here, and he describes how this make-believe character races through the night making lovers dream of love and there loved-ones. He is finally calmed by Romeo, and Benvolio sends Romeo into the house, saying they are just wasting time, and in a sad and unhopeful mood, he goes into the party. Love is the leading element in the next scene, as it is the first time Romeo sees Juliet at the party, and is stunned by her beauty. He says her beauty stands out of the crowd like a rich jewel in an Ethiops ear, and like a snowy dove trooping with crows. He also claims that she has beauty too rich for use. These quotes from the speech by Romeo in lines 43-52 are the start of a long relationship between the two, and Romeo seems to totally forget about Rosaline, when he exclaims, Did my heart love till now? Love quickly turns to hatred then, as Tybalt recognises Romeo as a Montague, as is all ready to start a fight and goes to Capulet to get his approval. Romeo is preparing to leave, but Juliet wants him to stay a little while longer. Romeo accepts her wish and says he will risk death to stay with her. A few minutes later, Lady Capulet enters and talks of Juliets marriage to Paris. Juliet refuses to get married to him. Capulet is angered at this disobedient wretch and that even if she does not want to marry he will drag thee on a hurdle hither. He complains about her ingratitude and storms out. Her mother speaks no words of wisdom or comfort, and so she has to turn to the Nurse for help in her predicament. F.Lawrence is angered at the fact this is going ahead even without Juliets approval. Juliet arrives, and Paris asks her to confess her love for him, but she says she will do no such thing and that even if she was forced to shed never say it to his face, but being spoke behind your back. She then begs F.Lawrence in despairation to help her, saying shed rather kill herself than marry Paris. He replies by saying if thou hast the strenght of will to slay thyself, he could help her. He would give her a potion that would put her into a deep sleep. She must agree to the wedding, then take the potion the night before the wedding. She would then be buried in the family tomb and when she awoke again; Shall Romeo by my letters know our drift, And hither shall he come;and he and I Will watch thy waking, and that very night Shall Romeo bear thee hence to Mantua. And this shall free thee from this present shame,. In scene 2,Juliet hurries home to her father, asking for his forgiveness for her earlier behaviour, and that she shall marry Paris. Juliet and the Nurse are in her room in scene 3 and Juliet says I pray thee leave me to myself tonight. this is so she can take the poison. She starts having feelings of anger at him, but then decides against that idea. Scene 5 is one of grief and despair, as the nurse discovers Juliets supposedly dead body and as Lord and Lady Capulet gradually arrive, they are all in a state of shock. The nurse is the most distraught, because shes been more of a mother to her than Lady Capulet-her real mother. Alas,alas,help,help,my ladys dead!. The Friar and Paris arrive too and are all equally distressed. Friar Lawrence tries to calm their grief by saying that she is now in heaven and that the parents could have done nothing to prevent death. He also proclaims that shes not well married that lives married long, but shes best married that dies married young, meaning that in a religious view she has had less time to sin, therefore will have an extremely happy afterlife. Everyone leaves apart from the nurse, who sadly prepares the body for burial. Balthasar, a messenger, visits Romeo in Mantua, telling him of Juliets death, and after Romeos asking, tells him that there is no letter from F.Lawrence. He is once again surrounded in a world of grief, says Well, Juliet, I will lie with thee tonight. He decides to kill himself, and to do that he will visit an apothecary to buy some illegal poison. He buys some poison that if you had the strength of twenty men, it would dispatch you straight. Scene 2 has news that also brings grief to Friar Lawrence, as he is visited by Friar John, who tells of a plague in Mantua, and so was unable to give Romeo F.Lawrences letter. He gets ready to go and rescue Juliet from her tomb. Grief is outstanding in scene 3 whilst Paris and his page visit Juliets tomb. Romeo starts to come into the tomb area and so Paris and Page hide. Romeo opens the tomb and is struck with love when he sees Juliets beauty once again. Paris then comes out of hiding and starts reprimanding Romeo; This is that banished haughty Montague, That murdered my loves cousin, with which Grief It is supposed the fair creature died, And here is come to do some villainous shame To the dead bodies. Pariss anger drives him on to fight Romeo, and makes one last request to Romeo; O I am slain. If thou be merciful, Open the tomb, lay me with Juliet. And so Paris was dead, killed by Romeo. On opening the tomb again to lay Paris inside, he is once again struck by Juliets beauty, as vows to die beside her. He swallows the poison and dies. Juliet then begins to wake up, and she is overcome with sadness and grief as she sees Romeos dead body at her side. Friar Lawrence cannot persuade her to leave with him, so he runs away, showing fear of what may happen. As soon as he has left, Juliet stabs herself. Three watchmen enter the tomb and one brings back the arrested Friar Lawrence. The Prince and the aggrieved Capulet family soon follow. Montague, who is now widowed, is also doubly aggrieved; Alas my liege, my wife is dead tonight. Grief of my sons exile stopped her breath. What further woe conspires against mine age? Friar Lawrence explains the catastrophic chain of events that led to the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet; Romeo, there dead, was husband to that Juliet; I married them would have married her perforce, To county Paris. A typical school day for many University students consists of sitting in a classroom and listening to a lecture. While there is great value in this style of learning, my community service work has taught me the many benefits of learning not only from professors, but also from fellow classmates, partners in the community, and individuals at volunteer sites, regardless of their age or educational background. It has also taught me to be an active member of our community and to share the burdens and responsibilities that goes along with that role — caring about the living conditions of others. I am very interested in literacy so I chose to volunteer at the Literacy Center and work with 11- to 16-year-old students after school. On my second visit to the center, I ate dinner with a 14-year-old boy and asked him how his day had gone. He said he didn’t like his reading class, and I asked him why. He replied, â€Å"I read at a third-grade level.† I was extremely shocked and didn’t know how to respond. After a minute of silence, he asked me if I knew about the Spanish_America War. I told him that I had just learned about it last semester in my college history class. He said he had to write a paper on it and asked if I could review what he’d written. I was amazed; a 14-year-old student was writing a paper about a piece of history I hadn’t even known existed until I was nineteen. This discussion gave me a new perspective on the concept of literacy. I learned that when considering what literacy means, it’s important to consider not only an individual’s ability to read and write, but also his or her total cache of knowledge.

To support her argument she mentions compromises she encountered when she made rules accepting ads in Ms. Magazine. (Steinem 243).† Therefore, Advertisers that represented cigarettes ads in this women magazine are the reason that black women are more addicted to smoking than other female population. Ads promoted smoking regardless of its unhealthy dreadful effects and that fact that it causes deaths. By pointing out such example, Steinem further supports the idea advertisers choose what they want to introduce to their audience. Steinem also shows that ads promote products regardless if they are good or not. Gloria Steinem mentions that ads in women magazines are different from those in neutral gender magazines. She states â€Å"The same companies that insist on recipes in women’s magazines place ad in people where there are no recipes. Cosmetic companies support the New Yorker, which has no regular beauty columns, and newspaper pages that has no â€Å"beauty atmosphere (Steinem 239) â€Å". She includes another prove, â€Å"We also explain that placing food ads only next to recipes and how-to entertain articles is actually a negative for many women. It associates food with work- in a way that says only women have to cook- or with guilt over not cooking and entertaining. Why not advertise food in diverse media that don’t always include recipes (thus reaching more men, who have become a third of all supermarket shoppers anyway and add the recipe interest with specialty magazines like Gourmet (a third of whose readers are men)? They introduce different ads to different group of  people that affects them in certain ways (introducing recipes in women’s add made them feel obligated to cook.). The ads that are in women’s magazines are different form those that are in other magazines. Hence, advertisers don not have a specific criteria in making their ads.They just provide what they think a certain group of people should receive. On the other hand, advertisers should not determine what women should receive. Advertisers should have one criteria introducing their ads to all audience, not different ads for different audience. Steinem states this idea to open the eyes of her readers that advertisers by doing this are actually limiting the freedom of advertising. Not that having advertisers choose the audience that receive certain ads was not bad enough. Advertisers now have their own rules and orders that should be applied before placing their ads in a certain magazine. Gloria Steinem states â€Å"Meanwhile, advertisers’ control over the editorial content of women’s magazines has become so institutionalized that it is sometimes written into â€Å"insertion orders† or dedicated to ad salespeople as official policy- whether by the agency, the client, or both.† And then she mentions some of the orders that were given to women’s magazine effective in 1990. â€Å"An American Tobacco company order for a Misty Slims ad noted that the U.S government warning must be included, but also that there must be: â€Å"no adjacency to editorial relating to health, medicine, religion, or dead (Steinem 241).† Besides the fact that advertisers are using different ads for different group of people, advertisers have their own rules and orders for their ads. They are requiring praise for their products. And this made new fields like â€Å"beauty writing† to be invented. This kind of writing praise products to oppress and push women to buy certain products. By mentioning some of the rules advertisers ask for, Steinem shows that instead of giving the freedom to include whatever editorial texts to be included, advertisers are choosing what to and not to be included in a certain ad or around a certain ad. Steinem relates this to her argument, because by choosing what editorials text should be included and by having specific demands and orders advertisers are clearly limiting the freedom of the press. Gloria Steinem shows how women’s magazines are filled with ads rather than  content . She mentions how ads makes the greater part of women’s magazines. â€Å"I picked up a variety of women’s magazines for February 1994, and counted the pages in each one (even including the table of contents, letters to editors, horoscopes, and the like) that were not ads and/or copy complementary to ads. Then I compared that number to the total pages. Out of 184 pages, McCall’s had 49 that were nonad or ad-related (Steinem 241).† She mentions more magazines and all of them had small portion that was nonad or ad-related. What Steinem is trying to show, is that women’s magazines are out of content. They are mostly ads. Whereas, looking back, women’s magazines had more meaningful content. â€Å"As older readers will remember, women’s magazines used to be a place where new young poets and short story writers could be published. Now, that’s very rare (Steinem 243).† Steinem uses comparison to show how women magazines have changed as time passed. It’s clearly that they worsened. They became meaningless and they lacked real and interesting information. This lack of reality and creativity in women’s magazines caused them to be repetitive; all going over the same products but in different editorial styles. This takes us back to Steinem main argument that advertisers are limiting the freedom of the press since they are the ones who control what a magazine would and wouldn’t have; and that is because they are they are paying to the articles that looks more applicable to the products they are advertising. Gloria Steinem was sufficient supporting her main argument, she stated clearly how advertisers choose their audience and determine what they should receive, how ads in women’s magazine differ from other ones, how advertisers are making their own rules and orders ,and finally how women’s magazine changed negativity during time. Good V. Evil Essay The Strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde represents a conflict between good and evil. One character (Jekyll) is determined to keep his impulses in check and ignore temptations, while the other character, Mr. Hyde, is brazen and submits to any temptation or impulse. The four main characters in the story are all men of similar social class who are capable of keeping their impulses in check and denying the temptations of evil. In the case of Dr. Jekyll however, Dr. Jekyll is not able to say no to the evils and uses an alternate identity to unleash the monster from within. The story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde can be easily related to the reader, as everybody knows the temptations of evil and the pleasures that both good and evil can bring somebody. Dr. Jekyll experiences strong tendencies of both good and bad. Unlike most men of Dr. Jekylls age and geography, Jekyll cannot keep himself from indulging in the pleasures that the evil side can provide. Jekylls trip into extreme evil (Mr. Hyde) is partially due to the fact that he has lived such an acceptable and exemplinary life in the past and he holds himself to a higher standard than some of his collegues. The drug makes Jekyll feel like he is a whole different person and that allows him to do whatever evil things he wants to do. The good in Jekyll is only returned if he takes an antidote. Just like many other people there is a constant struggle between good and evil of our everyday lives. People who struggle with drugs or alcohol or any other worldly temptations live a similar life to the one that Dr. Jekyll lives. Life is not easy for anybody and sometimes people need to escape their reality for a little while by taking a drug just like Jekyll does. Stevenson does well in creating a parallel between good and evil that people can relate to in their everyday lives. Stevensons story is very similar to a modern film called Limitless staring Bradley Cooper. In Limitless, Cooper, a young man struggling to pay his bills, tries a new drug that gives him extreme brain power which he uses to achieve great wealth and success. The success is only attainable with the use of the drug and without the drug, Cooper becomes sick and very weak, similar to what happens with Dr. Jekyll when he is without the drug. Just like Jekyll, Coopers health starts to dwindle as the supply of drugs becomes smaller and smaller. Stevenson is perhaps trying to teach the reader a valuable lesson in saying no to the temptations of evil. These temptations can often be difficult to ignore. Stevnson seems to suggest the Dr. Jekyll is the victim of a split personality disorder which was a new concept during the Victorian age. The only difference between Dr. Jekylls condition and a split personality disorder is that in the case of somebody suffering from split personalities, the person is aware of the other personality and can bring this person out willfully. Mr. Hyde however, cannot control Jekylls personalty and is not even aware of him. Dr. Jekyll is aware of Mr, Hyde though and understands the evilness that Mr. Hyde causes when Jekyll loses control and takes the drug too much. Mr. Hyde begins to take complete control Stvenson might be suggesting that even if a person is good, once they give into their evil tendencies there is no trunigng back. When Dr. Jekyll starts to flirt with hs bad sidem he begins to lose control of his personality and he eventually loses his friends and good nature. Stevnson displays the power of good will and the consewuences of even the first approach at evil. Once somebody is indulged into a bad habit, they can let their abad habit take control of their lives and it becomes extremely difficult to come back from the evilness once it has become a major part of your life. Dr. Jekyll says, with every day and from both sides of my intelligence, the moral and intellectual, I thus drew steadily nearer to the truthby whose partial discovery I have been doomed to such a dreadful shipwreck: that man is not truly one, but truly two Stevenson. Jekyll is describing the affects of his choices and how he is now truning into his bad side for good because that is the person that he has become. Stevensons main goal in writing this story is to create horror and excitement for the reader. He leaves the reader to draw their own conclusions about the message in the story but it is clear to me that this story is about human nature and the batte of good vs. evil. Once a human gives into their temtations they are more likely to indulge in these evil deeds again and again. Dr. Jekyll tried a drug that made him into a different person and he enjoye giving into his evil tendencies. Eventually these evil tendencies took control over Jekyll and he became too evil to return to the good natured Dr. the his colleagues knew.

Jealousy in Snow-White Few people can grow up within today's society without knowing the tale of Snow White. From the Grimm Brothers to Disney, it has been told and retold to children throughout the ages. However, what is often overlooked are the true meanings within the story. Fairytales typically have underlying messages that can be found between the lines, generally in terms of the key themes. Snow-White discusses the theme of jealousy, and shows how humans' obsessions of material can lead to their own downfall as well as the harm of others. When focusing on the relationship between Snow-White and her stepmother the Queen, it is evident that the jealousy inside the story results in a power struggle in which beauty and pride are seen as the basis for the stepmother’s envy towards Snow-White. â€Å"This gave the queen a great shock, and she became yellow and green with envy, from that hour her heart turned against Snow-White, and she hated her. † Throughout the story of Snow-White jealousy is omnipresent. The major evidence of jealousy is the daily ritual of the queen in which she consults her magic mirror on who is the most beautiful person in the kingdom. As she says, â€Å"Looking-glass upon the wall, who is the fairest of us all? † she repeatedly expects to be in her favor. One day she is outraged when it appeared that Snow-White surpassed her. This information drove the queen to hate Snow-White and generates jealousy and soon she ordered her death. By looking at beauty as commodity through which power can be gained, this action can be interpreted as a mean for the queen to preserved her power through beauty. The stepmother is very narcissistic and obsessed with power, she constantly wants to be the center of all the attention. She is afraid that snow white will gradually take her place as the most beautiful woman in the kingdom. As a result, she fears that Snow-White could use her beauty in order to usurp power from the queen and surpasses her. After all, snow white was young and beautiful, and the queen would only deteriorate with time. In the story, the pride of the queen was to be the most beautiful of the kingdom. Indeed, â€Å"Pride pumped in her like a poison. † Until one day, the mirror replied â€Å"queen you are full fair, its true but snow white is fairer han you. † This statement is a turning point among the story. She becomes green with envy and obsessed by the desire of killing Snow-White. Jealousy seized the queen one more time as she could not stand not to be the best. This time, more than her rank and the fear to loose her power, she is loosing her own pride and is jealous about the fact that she is not THE most beautiful woman. She was very obsessed to be the fairest, she bel ieved in her mirror and was enraged that, â€Å"snow-white was a thousand time fairer than the queen would never be. Her extreme jealousy towards snow-white pushed her to madness, and non-human behaviors. She eats the heart and liver of a beast believing that they are snow-white’s organs. Another interpretation we can give to the story could be what Snow-White represents to the King’s eyes. Snow-white is the daughter of the King and the former queen. This is making the queen particularly jealous in two ways. First, she is probably annoyed that she is the daughter of another queen and that herself doesn’t have any child. It is an opposition of blood between stepmother and stepdaughter. In the other hand, the jealousy comes from that snow white will naturally generates interest to the king as she is his daughter. The queen would not want to share her husband with her stepdaughter. To sum up, jealousy of the queen in the story of snow white is absolutely outrageous. The obsession of the queen and her extreme jealousy leads her to madness and crime. She commits act of cannibalism and repeatedly attempt to kill Snow-White. Her sins took her to her own downfall as she is the one that finally dies in the story. The story teaches us a lesson, not to be vain, and be blessed with what you have instead.
